The Lecture is:

“Study on the effects of chemotherapy on immune cells in cancer patients -- The potential application of droplet microfluidics in medicine and life sciences”

 

Abstract:

Cancer is a serious malignant disease exerting heavy burden on public health. Chemotherapy is important in cancer therapy, but some patients could not have chemotherapy due to its significant side effects, especially those on immune cells. Currently, there are few ways to predict the effects of chemotherapy drugs on individual patient’s immune system.

A novel PDMS microfluidic chip technology could be used to perform a comprehensive study on the influence of chemotherapy drugs on cancer cells, immune cells and healthy tissue cells. Using droplet microfluidics, this project will comprehensively evaluate the toxicity and specificity of individual chemotherapy drugs on patients' cells, explore methods to screen chemotherapy drugs with high efficiency and low toxicity for each patient, and eventually help medical doctors choose individualized chemotherapy for the patient. Moreover, this project has the advantages to promptly and accurately observe and evaluate cell samples with small quantity, therefore enabling the study on rare cell types with critical functions in peripheral blood and in tumor microenvironment. This project will develop novel technology in immune research and accelerate the study on tumor microenvironment. In conclusion, this project is a multidisciplinary research combining life sciences, new chemical materials and bioinformatics. This project will not only have clinical application to promote the development of precision medicine, but also explore efficient and innovative immunology methods, therefore, will have important value in the research field of life sciences.

 

Biography:

Li Zhao graduated from Henan Medical University in 1994 and worked as a physician for five years. Li did her fellowship at the Air Force General Hospital of China.

From 1999 to 2002, Li did her Master study at the immunology Institute of Shandong University medical school. After graduation. Li worked as an Assistant Professor of Shandong university.

In 2004, Li started PhD study in immunology at the University of Alberta in Canada. During the PhD study, she won the National Research Award of Canada twice. From 2012 to 2013, Li did postdoctoral research at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the United States. In 2014, Li obtained scholarship to study at the Schulich School of business in Canada. Her MBA degree is in Health Industry Management.

In 2016, Li returned to her home city in China mainland. Li is a Professor majoring in Tumor Immunology at Henan University of Science and Technology (HAUST).
